Soon, the castle came under the authority of Czech kings and in the XIV century it was already owned by the Hungarians. Finally, the powerful Hochberg family took over having the biggest impact on castle’s history and architecture. They ruled the castle for over 400 years, until the WWII. As a result of the Third Reich and then the Russian army’s devastating activities, the building was partly destroyed. During the war, Nazis planned to convert the castle into one of Hitler’s headquarters and they built long underground tunnels. For next few years the castle was repeatedly looted as it had no former fortifications.
