In the course of time, this most prominent castle in Wroclaw area had many different owners and has been repeatedly destroyed. It was built in the XIII century under the rule of king Bolek. Its location on a high rocky hill surrounded by a picturesque valley made it one of the most original fortresses in the area. Soon, the castle came under the authority of Czech kings and in the XIV century it was already owned by the Hungarians. Finally, the powerful Hochberg family took over having the biggest impact on castle’s history and architecture. They ruled the castle for over 400 years, until the WWII. As a result of the Third Reich and then the Russian army’s devastating activities, the building was partly destroyed. During the war, Nazis planned to convert the castle into one of Hitler’s headquarters and they built long underground tunnels. For next few years the castle was repeatedly looted as it had no former fortifications.

The Church of Peace in Swidnica is an incredibly impressive building from the XVI century and the biggest baroque temple in Europe. Its uniqueness is appreciated around the world and in 2001 it was listed on the UNESCO World Heritage list. In recent years it has become extremely attractive place for tourists of all nationalities.

The Church is a symbol of the end of the Thirty Years’ War fought between 1618 and 1648. Its construction was a part of the Peace Treaty of Westphalia that ended the war.

It was designed in the shape of a Greek cross. It’s the original baroque outlook, that makes the temple so special among all protestant  buildings with stark decors. It was certainly ahead of its time. One of the most characteristic elements of the church’s interior are the baroque embellishments of the main altar, a pulpit, a font and impressive church organs.

Entering the church one can see a wide aisle covered by an impressive wooden ceiling embellished with beautiful polymorphic. The church’s architecture is characterized with artistically sculptured loges between church galleries.

The Church of Peace is surrounded by several historical buildings including a bell tower, a school and the cemetery, here many famous citizens of Swidnica were buried.
